The Power of The Mind
Whether or not you know anything about meditation, you’ve probably learned or at least heard about the power of your mind.
It is truly formidable.
Our children’s minds, too, are incredibly powerful. And this can be scary until we teach them that they are the ones in control.
You can frame it like this. Tell your kiddo they are ready to learn about their mind…
Then, share with them that in their mind sit lots of different emotions - worry, sadness, happiness, disgust, anxiety, fear etc. They all work together to make up the person your kiddo is! And they all actually have important roles to play. (Think - the movie Inside Out)
Then, teach your child that THEY are sitting at the very head of the table. They are the one in charge, the boss, if you will.
Sometimes, certain feelings get really strong and big and take over. They sometimes even tell us things that aren’t true, yep! Even adult minds do this. These feelings might be trying to protect you but sometimes (bedtime is a good one), you really don’t need them to.
This is when it’s YOUR job, tell them, to stand up to these feelings. Brainstorm with your child then what they would say to an unwanted feeling like ‘worry’ to get it to sit back down.
Help your child with that inner dialogue - and help them think about which feelings they’d like to call on, to feel more calm and safe.
They sit at the head of their mind table.
