Nervous Systems
When your kiddo’s nervous system is dysregulated, they cannot manage their emotions or reactions. Often times, this affects our own nervous systems.
We’ve got to manage our own, in order to support our children in coming back into balance.
This means you’ve got to have a list of things you can do to regulate - lengthen your exhale, ground through your feet, move your body, step away, name your feeling, go outside …
Your children also need a list of self-care ideas that they can access when they need to (though they will need reminders of course, as we can’t think straight when we’re dysregulated so remembering is tough).
Make their list together with them of things that help them to calm down, starting with ideas like: shake it out, scream into a pillow, do art, punch something soft, snuggle with a pet, play music, etc…
Sefl-regulation is an important tool in growing up as well as for you, parents! It’s something we’re all - always - hopefully practicing.
