School Goals

The start to a new school year really provides an opportunity to set up right with your child.

Sit down and talk with them about what they’re looking forward to, what they’re perhaps apprehensive about and then about their goals.

I suggest doing this either the first week of school or whenever you can but early in the year. Sit and talk one-on-one so siblings can’t compare.

Go through the subjects out loud and see what goals they have for themselves. Listen more than talk. They may need some prodding but really allow them the chance to self-reflect.

If you’ve got a few, after hearing their ideas, you can ask them if they’d like to add these to their list.

Of course, please remember to talk with them also about the social and emotional component of school. Have them set a couple of goals around friendships, behavior, communication, community, advocacy etc. This is a huge part of their growth and learning and not to be ignored.
