No BUTs

Language helps teach our children so much, especially influence, awareness and compassion.

The word BUT tends to negate what came just before. Too often, it takes away from a vulnerable share or makes an excuse for it.

Examples:

I love you but I’m super mad.

I’m sorry but I can’t stand it when you do that.

Instead, try to replace BUT with AND.

This then does not negate what was just said.

Instead, it reinforces that there are many feelings and experiences that can all be true at once. A reality of life that will be extremely helpful for them to understand.

Examples:

I love you and I’m really angry.

I’m sorry I blew up and it drives me crazy when you do that.
