Sensitive Ears
For kiddos who’re sensitive, sound can be very intense. Be aware of this. Offer earplugs if you’re going to fireworks or a loud concert. Check in about the volume of the stereo or TV. And, most importantly, note that your own tone of voice can cause big feelings inside for them that perhaps you didn’t even intend.
Sometimes, as adults, we’re moving so fast and operating under such pressure, that our voice comes out much harsher than we meant. If you attune to your child, you’ll be able to tell. Some may even be courageous enough to tell you. Don’t right this off.
How could you soften your tone? How might you be able to communicate urgency or significance without the aggressiveness or volume? And ask for a do-over. Try it again, knowing and valuing your child’s sensitivity.
